Page Content
The Library Resource Centre facilitates and supports the teaching and learning goals of the school. A wide range of quality resources and information services facilitate and contribute to the development of our students as lifelong learners.
The school has a qualified teacher librarian who organises an effective program which instructs the children in a full range of library and literacy skills.
Opening Times
The Library Resource Centre is open Monday to Friday from 8.15am until 3.15pm.
Students from Years 4 -6 are encouraged to use then library facilities for browsing, quiet reading and research during the first lunch break. Classes are also assigned time to access the library and its various spaces and facilities during the first break.
Borrowing
We encourage our students to borrow from our school library every week. Children are permitted to borrow books for one week. All students require a waterproof bag for borrowing. Students are encouraged to make informed choices about what they borrow. Assistance is provided at the beginning of the school year through discussions about designated areas for different year levels, tips about borrowing and how to locate books on the database and on the shelves. Ongoing recommendations are made by peers and school staff as the year progresses.
Book Week & Literature Promotion
Opportunities are available for students to be involved in literary events. Every year at OLA one week in September is set aside to celebrate the special role that books and literature have in our lives. The annual Book-Week celebrations include visits by authors and illustrators as well as performance workshops designed to inform and entertain students across all year levels. The week culminates with a Book Fair, a special fundraising initiative which attracts commission on the books sold to parents and students.
The Teacher Librarian also coordinates the Premiers Reading Challenge, the Gold Star Reading Club (in association with the BCC), the Great Book Swap, the Queensland Readers’ Cup Competition, National Simultaneous Story time and the OLA inter-house Readers’ Cup for Years 4-6.
